What it is

Azul transforms the historical craft of Portuguese tile laying into a sophisticated board game that feels both elegant and surprisingly intense. Players compete to decorate the Royal Palace of Evora by drafting colorful resin tiles from central factories. The core loop is simple to learn but difficult to master: you must fill specific rows on your board to move tiles into your mosaic wall, scoring points based on placement and completion. However, any tiles you take that cannot fit on your board result in negative points, creating a high-stakes environment where one wrong move can ruin a perfect round. The physical components of this game are exceptional, featuring heavy resin tiles that provide a satisfying tactile experience. While it presents itself as a peaceful art-themed game, Azul is famous for its 'hate drafting' mechanics, where players deliberately take tiles to force their opponents into taking penalties. This blend of beautiful aesthetics and aggressive strategy makes it a standout choice for both casual family nights and competitive gaming groups. The game scales perfectly from two to four players, though the two-player experience is notably more tactical and focused.

Ravvy AI insight

Azul sits in the sweet spot of board gaming where the rules take five minutes to explain but a lifetime to optimize. The 2018 Spiel des Jahres win is well-deserved because it eliminates player elimination while keeping the tension high until the final tile is placed. For the best experience, ignore the 'family' label and treat this as a tight logic puzzle where controlling your opponent's options is just as important as building your own wall.

How to get the most out of it

Prioritize Vertical Columns

While completing horizontal rows ends the game, the biggest point bonuses come from completing vertical columns and sets of all five colors. Plan your mid-game strategy around these high-value goals.

Ownership tips

tip

Watch the Floor Line

Always keep an eye on your opponents floor lines. If they have limited space, you can force them to take a large pile of tiles that they cannot place, resulting in significant negative point penalties.

care

Tile Bag Maintenance

Occasionally shake the linen bag thoroughly between rounds. Because tiles are added back in large batches, they can clump by color, which might lead to predictable and less balanced factory displays.
