What it is

The Breville Smart Grinder Pro bridges the gap between entry level gear and professional espresso setups. It features stainless steel conical burrs designed to minimize heat during the grinding process, preserving the delicate essential oils of your beans. With 60 distinct settings, it offers enough granularity to dial in a respectable espresso shot while remaining versatile enough for French press or cold brew enthusiasts. The standout feature is the Dosing IQ technology, which allows for 0.2 second timing increments to ensure your output remains consistent batch after batch. Functionality is at the forefront with a clear LCD display that tracks your grind time and number of cups. The machine is built for convenience, including two portafilter cradles for hands free operation and a sealed container for drip or pour over needs. While it sits at a mid range price point, its ability to transition between brewing styles makes it a centerpiece for home baristas who experiment with different techniques. The brushed stainless steel finish provides a premium look that matches the broader Breville ecosystem.

Ravvy AI insight

This grinder excels in its user interface, making the complex task of dialing in espresso accessible for beginners. While the 60 steps are generous, users should note that the internal burr can be adjusted manually for an even finer range if the external dial reaches its limit. It offers the best value for those who frequently switch between portafilters and paper filters.

When switching from a coarse setting to a fine setting, run the grinder for a second to clear out old fragments. This ensures your next cup is brewed only with the newly selected grind size.

Ownership tips

tip

Adjust the Internal Burr

If you cannot get your espresso fine enough even at setting one, you can remove the top burr and adjust the internal wire handle. Moving it to a lower number will shift the entire 60 step range into a finer spectrum.

care

Clean the Chute Regularly

Coffee oils and fine dust can clog the exit chute over time. Use the included brush every two weeks to clear the path and ensure your dose weight remains consistent.

Frequently asked questions

Can this grinder handle oily dark roast beans?

Yes, it can handle dark roasts, but you should clean the burrs more frequently. Oily beans tend to stick to the conical burrs and the chute, which can lead to clogs if neglected for months.

Does it work with 58mm portafilters?

Absolutely. The machine includes a specific 58mm cradle that slides into the machine. This allows you to grind directly into professional sized espresso baskets without holding them by hand.

Is the hopper removable when it is full of beans?

Yes, the hopper features a locking mechanism that seals the bottom. You can turn the dial to the locked position and lift the hopper off to change beans without spilling them everywhere.

How loud is the Smart Grinder Pro during use?

It produces a standard mechanical whirring sound typical of electric burr grinders. While it is not whisper quiet, the grinding process is fast enough that it should not be a major disturbance in a typical kitchen.
