What it is

The Catstages Buggin Out Puzzle is a clever solution for owners of indoor cats who need a mental outlet. Designed by Nina Ottosson, this Level 2 game uses a leaf and bug motif to hide kibble or treats behind sliding and rotating leaves. Unlike simple balls or tunnels, this requires cats to coordinate their paws and noses to slide components in specific directions, mimicking the natural searching behaviors they would use in the wild. The build quality is impressive for the price point, utilizing BPA-free plastic without small detachable parts that could pose a choking hazard. While it is marketed as a level two intermediate puzzle, the difficulty is adjustable by how you place the treats. Beginners can find food in the open wells, while advanced cats must learn to push treats through the top holes of the sliding pegs to drop them into the track below, keeping the challenge fresh over time.

Ravvy AI insight

While this is a Level 2 puzzle, it acts as a perfect entry point for most cats because the sliding leaves move with very little resistance. For the best longevity, use high-aroma treats to help your cat locate the rewards initially, then transition to standard kibble once they have mastered the mechanics. If your cat is a 'flipper' who tries to flip the board over, consider placing it on a silicone mat to add grip.

How to get the most out of it

Start with easy wins

For the first few sessions, place treats in the open leaf wells without covering them. Once your cat associates the board with food, start partially covering the wells with the sliding leaves to build their confidence.

Ownership tips

care

Clean the tracks weekly

Dust and cat hair can accumulate in the sliding grooves, making the pieces harder to move. Hand wash the board with warm soapy water and a soft brush to ensure the leaves slide effortlessly.

tip

Use for weight management

Instead of a traditional bowl, use this puzzle to serve a portion of your cat's daily dry food. It turns mealtime into a 15 minute activity rather than a 30 second gulp, helping with digestion and satiety.
