What it is

Sierra Dawn Campsuds remains the gold standard for outdoor enthusiasts who need a single bottle to handle every cleaning task imaginable. Its formula is exceptionally concentrated, meaning a mere three to five drops are typically sufficient to wash a full set of camp cookware or a quick load of trail laundry. The light citrus scent derived from lemon and lime oils provides a refreshing clean without the chemical punch of synthetic fragrances, making it tolerable for both personal bathing and dishwashing. While many soaps struggle in harsh conditions, this detergent-based formula is engineered to perform in cold mountain streams and even saltwater. Its legacy spanning over 50 years is a testament to its reliability. However, users must remember that biodegradable does not mean instant; the formula requires soil bacteria to break down properly, so following leave-no-trace disposal methods is essential for protecting sensitive aquatic ecosystems.

Ravvy AI insight

When comparing against pure castile soaps, Campsuds offers superior performance in hard or cold water due to its detergent-based formulation. While 8 ounces may seem small for the price, the high concentration levels mean this bottle typically outlasts three bottles of standard dish soap. For ultralight hikers, decanting this into a 1-ounce dropper bottle is a common pro-move that covers a week-long trek.

Ownership tips

tip

Use a Dropper for Economy

The 8-ounce bottle is great for car camping, but for backpacking, decant the liquid into a small eye-dropper bottle. You only need a few drops per use, so a tiny container can last for several days.

care

Prevent Leaks

Ensure the flip-top is snapped completely shut and consider storing the bottle in a small zip-top bag. The thin consistency of the soap can cause it to seep through threads if the bottle is compressed in a tight pack.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this as shampoo?

Yes, Campsuds is formulated to be gentle enough for hair and skin. It effectively removes sweat and oils, though it may feel less moisturizing than dedicated cosmetic shampoos.

Is it safe for use directly in a river?

No soap, even biodegradable ones, should be used directly in a body of water. The suds can harm aquatic life. Always wash and dispose of greywater 200 feet away from water sources.

Does it work in cold water?

Yes, unlike many oil-based soaps that solidify or fail to lather in low temperatures, this formula is specifically designed to cut through grease and grime even in freezing mountain water.

How long does one 8oz bottle last?

For an average solo camper, a single 8-ounce bottle can last through a full season of trips. Because it is highly concentrated, you are using drops rather than ounces for most cleaning tasks.
