What it is
The Garmin vivoactive 5 marks a significant shift for the series, ditching the previous generation's MIP display for a high-contrast AMOLED screen. This hardware upgrade makes health data and notifications pop with clarity, though it sacrifices the stainless steel bezel of its predecessor for a lighter, fiber-reinforced polymer build. It sits comfortably in the sweet spot between a basic tracker and a high-end multisport watch, offering robust GPS accuracy and detailed wellness metrics like HRV status and Body Battery. What sets this model apart is its focus on recovery and inclusivity. It introduces a dedicated wheelchair mode that tracks pushes instead of steps and features an improved sleep coach that accounts for daytime naps. While it lacks an altimeter for tracking floors climbed, the addition of personalized workout benefit summaries and nap detection makes it a smarter companion for those who prioritize holistic health over hardcore mountain trekking.
Ravvy AI insight
Compared to the Venu 3, this model offers nearly identical software features at a lower price point, making it a superior value for most users. The move to a 42mm-only size is a strategic middle ground, but buyers should note the lack of a barometric altimeter which means no floor climbing stats. Its specialized wheelchair mode is a market-leading accessibility feature that competitors often overlook.

Ownership tips
tip
Optimize Battery with AOD
While the Always-On Display (AOD) looks great, it cuts battery life in half. Use the gesture-to-wake feature instead to stretch your charge to the full 11 days.
care
Clean After Sweaty Sessions
Rinse the watch with fresh water after every workout to prevent sweat and salt buildup around the sensors. Use a non-soap cleaner to avoid irritating your skin or damaging the seal.
