What it is

The Nex Playground represents a modern evolution of camera-based gaming, providing a controller-free experience that prioritizes physical movement. Unlike traditional consoles that tether players to a couch, this compact device uses an AI-powered wide-angle lens to track body motion, allowing up to four players to jump, wave, and duck their way through various mini-games. It is designed specifically for families who want to reduce sedentary screen time without sacrificing the engagement of video games. The hardware itself is remarkably small, sitting unobtrusively under a TV, yet it packs enough processing power to handle real-time motion tracking without the need for wearable sensors. While the initial package includes five basic games to get you started, the system is designed around a subscription model. To access the full library of popular characters and new monthly releases, you will need to factor in the ongoing cost of the Play Pass. For households seeking a safe, ad-free digital environment that promotes physical activity, it offers a compelling alternative to tablet gaming.

Ravvy AI insight

When evaluating the Nex Playground, consider the layout of your room. The camera requires a clear line of sight and sufficient floor space for up to four players to move safely. While the hardware is reasonably priced, the long-term value depends heavily on the Play Pass subscription, so check the current game catalog for titles like Peppa Pig or TMNT to ensure they align with your child's interests before committing.

How to get the most out of it

Optimizing Camera Tracking

Position the console at waist height or slightly higher for the most accurate motion tracking. Ensure the room is well-lit and there are no bright lights or mirrors directly behind the players which might confuse the sensor.

Ownership tips

tip

Maximize Floor Space

Clear a 6 by 6 foot area in front of the TV to allow for safe movement. If playing with four people, you may need even more lateral space to prevent players from bumping into one another during intense rounds.

care

Lens Maintenance

Keep the camera lens free of fingerprints and dust by wiping it occasionally with a clean microfiber cloth. Since the system relies entirely on visual data, a smudged lens can lead to lag or missed movements.
