What it is

The ShawnCo Essential Dog Harness stands out in a crowded market by offering three distinct leash attachment points. While many harnesses force you to choose between front or back clips, this model provides both, plus a third option to help manage different pulling behaviors. The interior is lined with a breathable mesh to prevent overheating, while the exterior features high-visibility reflective trim for safer evening walks. Constructed with heavy duty nylon and reinforced stitching, this vest is built for daily utility rather than just aesthetics. The step in design is particularly useful for excitable dogs, as it can be secured in seconds using the single side buckle. It strikes a functional balance between a lightweight walking vest and a control harness, featuring a built in handle for immediate manual restraint when navigating crowded areas or high distraction environments.

Ravvy AI insight

The three-ring design is the key selling point here, allowing you to transition from a training front-clip to a casual back-clip as your dog's leash manners improve. For small breeds like the size Small tested, the lightweight 5.3 ounce profile is a significant benefit as it doesn't weigh down the dog's frame. Prioritize the girth measurement over the weight guide for the best fit, as the belly strap provides the most adjustability.

How to get the most out of it

Finding the Right Ring

Use the front chest ring for dogs that pull excessively to redirect their momentum. Switch to the back rings for casual sniffing walks or when using a long training lead.

Ownership tips

care

Cleaning Your Mesh

Hand wash the harness in cool water with a mild detergent to preserve the reflective coating. Avoid machine drying, as the high heat can weaken the nylon fibers and plastic buckle.

tip

The Two Finger Rule

When adjusting the straps, ensure you can fit two fingers between the harness and your dog's body. This prevents chafing while ensuring the dog cannot slip out backwards.

Frequently asked questions

Is this harness escape-proof?

While the harness is secure when fitted properly, it is a vest style rather than a full body wrap. For dogs known as escape artists, ensure the belly strap is tightened enough that it cannot be pulled over the ribcage.

Can I use this for car travel?

Yes, the back rings can be used to tether the dog to a seatbelt attachment. However, it is not officially crash-tested, so it is best for preventing the dog from roaming the cabin rather than high-impact safety.

Does the handle interfere with the leash?

No, the handle is positioned flush against the back. It is designed to be low-profile so that it does not snag on brush during hikes or interfere with the D-rings.

Is the Oceanic Blue color colorfast?

The high-quality nylon is dyed to resist fading. However, frequent exposure to salt water or heavy bleach cleaning may cause the vibrancy to dim over time.
