What it is

The YOTUO 500GB External Hard Drive positions itself as a durable, budget-friendly bridge between your various devices. Featuring a distinctive shock-absorbing silicone sleeve, this mechanical drive is specifically engineered to survive the minor bumps and drops that come with a mobile lifestyle. Its hybrid drive technology and 7200 RPM speed offer a slight performance edge over standard 5400 RPM budget drives, making it a reliable choice for offloading legacy console games or storing large media libraries. Compatibility is a primary strength here, as the drive supports both USB 3.0 and USB-C connections right out of the box. This makes it just as useful for a student moving files between a modern MacBook and a campus PC as it is for a gamer looking to clear up space on a PlayStation or Xbox console. While 500GB is on the lower end of modern storage capacities, the compact form factor and plug and play simplicity provide an immediate solution for users who need extra room without a high price tag.

Ravvy AI insight

While the listing mentions 150GBps speeds, this is a technical error in the source data. As a 7200 RPM mechanical drive, expect real-world transfer speeds around 100-130 MB/s. This is perfectly adequate for playing PS4 or Xbox One titles directly from the drive, but it will not run native PS5 or Xbox Series X games due to hardware limitations.

Using with Game Consoles

Format the drive via your console settings menu to use it as extended storage. Remember that while it stores PS5 games, they must be moved back to the internal SSD to be played.

Ownership tips

tip

Maximize Transfer Speeds

Always use a USB 3.0 port (usually blue) on your computer. Plugging into an older USB 2.0 port will significantly bottle-neck your data transfer rates.

care

Ejecting Safely

Always use the Safely Remove Hardware option in your OS before unplugging. Since this is a mechanical drive, pulling it while the disk is spinning can cause data corruption.

Frequently asked questions

Does this work with both Mac and Windows?

Yes, it is compatible with both. However, you may need to reformat it to exFAT if you plan to move files back and forth between a Mac and a PC frequently.

Is a separate power supply required?

Can I play PS5 games directly from this drive?
