What it is

The Amazon Basics 173-Piece tool set is designed to be the definitive 'everything drawer' solution for new homeowners and renters. It covers the essential ground of home maintenance by including a 3/8-inch ratchet, two styles of pliers, and an extensive array of hex keys and driver bits. The tools are constructed from heat-treated alloy steel with a chrome plating, offering enough durability to handle tightening loose hinges or assembling flat-pack furniture without immediate wear. While not intended for professional mechanical work, the sheer volume of pieces ensures you rarely hunt for the right size bit. The inclusion of a blow-molded carrying case is the real value driver here, as it keeps all 173 pieces organized and prevents the clutter that usually plagues budget tool collections. The non-slip plastic handles provide a decent grip for small tasks, though they lack the ergonomic refinement found in premium brands. For the price of two or three individual high-end tools, this kit provides a functional foundation for anyone who needs to be self-sufficient for basic repairs around the apartment or house.

Ravvy AI insight

This kit prioritizes breadth over depth by providing a high quantity of bits and hex keys rather than specialized heavy tools. It is most effective as a stationary 'emergency kit' for the garage or closet; however, users should supplement this with a dedicated power drill for larger renovation projects as manual driving can be tedious.

Using the Ratchet

Use the thumb lever on the ratchet head to quickly switch between tightening and loosening. Avoid using the ratchet to 'break' extremely rusted bolts as it may damage the internal gears.

Ownership tips

care

Prevent Surface Oxidation

While the tools are chrome-plated, they can still develop spots if stored in a damp garage. Wipe them down with a lightly oiled cloth once a year to maintain the finish.

tip

Secure the Case

Always ensure the tools are snapped firmly into their designated slots before closing the lid. This prevents items from falling out and rattling when you next open the case.
